My name is Irvin Hernandez; I am currently in my freshman year at Phoenix College, hoping to complete my second semester. I work a part-time job at Canyon State Credit Union as a Personal Financial Consultant (which is a teller, but the title I'm given sounds a lot more intriguing). Most of my duties, there are the basic ones for any bank or credit union, handle transactions, open and close accounts, and refer a member to loans. Sometimes it's simple, but I get a much broader view of the numbers and finance world, which makes my job more exciting because I would love to pursue a career in the mathematics field.

Community college wasn't my first choice after high school; however, over those years, I didn't prepare myself, and I found myself not ready for university. I wasn't too thrilled with the thought of community college because I wasn't sure what to expect. Now that I'm going in on my second semester, I can say that it has been a pleasant journey, and I have found myself with dozens of opportunities, some of which I'm sure I wouldn't have received at a regular university.

When I first entered Phoenix college, I was lost. I wasn't sure what career I wanted to pursue or where I wanted to go. With all the experience I've gained and everything I've learned, I now have a set interest in what career I would love to pursue — I'm thinking of Mathematics (statistics). Math has always been a joy to me, even during my roughest years of high school, when I felt like doing nothing; I still kept an interest in math. Luckily my enjoyment of that topic has brought me where I currently am.

For the future, I hope to pursue a career that has to do with numbers and something that my major will support. I've been looking at data analysts or actuaries, which are both jobs offered with the major I am choosing.
